Martin Kaar: Lichtobjekt / Light Object
Through the use of various sources of light, Martin Kaar attempts to put our perception as well as our ability to distinguish between illusion and reality to the test. With its angular metal profiles, the thoroughly open light box from 2001 titled Light Object has a technical appearance – like a device that has a task to fulfil. Offline, the work has a gap in the centre – there is nothing to see except for the reflection of the public. From every angle and in the reception of each individual beholder, it shows a different reflection. Online, an infinite depth opens up: flanked by countless mirrored, blue, fluorescent tubes, the light object opens up what appears to be a space behind it that our gaze aims to explore.
