On the historic site of the former Kabelwerk Köpenick cable factory, between Salvador-Allende-Brücke, Friedrichshagener Straße and the river Spree, a mixed residential and commercial development is to be built in the coming years. Visible construction work is now beginning in preparation.

Two striking historic brick buildings form the entrance to the former Kabelwerk Köpenick cable factory. Since its closure in the mid-1990s, the buildings have been unused and derelict and the site has gone to waste. The district of Treptow-Köpenick is conducting the procedures for Land-Use Plan 9-53 for the approximately 66,000 square metre site. The project is now getting underway and the first excavators are rolling.

In preparation for the planned new development with approximately 920 apartments, a daycare centre and non-disruptive businesses (e.g. service companies, restaurants, artists’ studios and local suppliers), BUWOG is commencing with the soil remediation of the site, which was formerly used for industrial purposes and is heavily contaminated. Beginning in October 2024, BUWOG will start clearing and disposing of contaminated materials together with contracted specialist companies. This will involve dismantling dilapidated existing buildings that are not worth preserving, clearing and securing listed areas and professionally disposing of contaminated soil material. These measures will initially take around 15 months. In coordination with the district, BUWOG is also aiming to submit a building application for the structural restoration of the listed areas.

Once the district’s current binding land-use procedure has been completed, realisation of the urban development objectives, in particular the construction of new housing, can begin.
