The three-dimensional figure consists of 20 equilateral triangular surfaces arranged in such a way that they form the basic body of an icosahedron. Deep protrusions in the curved surfaces suggest an immaterial sphere, which plays off the strict geometry of the polyhedron. The artist finds inspiration for the light sculpture with its colourful segments in the visionary Richard Buckminster Fuller, who succeeded in making the world more comprehensible in its three-dimensionality with spectacular models and buildings. In Sandbichler's work, the icosahedron appears in various groups of works. In his ongoing series The Uniform of the Private, he braces six objects that are non-ideal according to the construction principle of tensegrity in such a way that they keep each other suspended without touching. His walk-in sculpture Lebenskapsel / Life Capsule, 2001 – a spatial wooden construction whose triangular surfaces are covered with transparent plastic film – was positioned as a futuristic “observation centre” on city rooftops or in parks to give users a different view of the world.
