Peter Sandbichler: Untitled
Sandbichler's work is an open reference to Erwin Hauer, the Austrian representative of Modular Constructivism, who – having emigrated to the USA in the post-war period – caused a sensation with his architectural screens made of ceramic and concrete, but who was denied major artistic recognition in both his newfound and previous homeland. It is the pioneering achievement of Erwin Hauer, who developed his complex weave and patterns of repetition long before the invention of computers, CNC milling and 3D printing, that is the subject of Peter Sandbichler's work: deliberately minimalist and in inexpensive plywood to call attention to the model-like quality. As a reminiscence of craftsmanship, which blurs the flow of the artist in its perfection, the artist saws everything with a sabre saw rather than having the perforated panels produced by means of automation. Rather than as an image, Peter Sandbichler originally conceived the work from a horizontal perspective, as a space-dividing element that plays with light and shadow and the association of Arabic patterns; the modular construction also enables vertical orientation in the room, however.
