Heller Park
Founded in 1890, Gustav and Wilhelm Heller’s sugar factory already needed a larger site in 1898. The massive, exposed brick building with an additional structure (boiler house with chimney in the central courtyard) was expanded several times by Siegmund Müller between 1910 and 1914. Until the First World War, Heller, a purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court, also maintained operations in London, Paris and New York and employed 1,500 people in Vienna. After Aryanisation and restitution, the company was sold in 1970, with publishing houses and artists’ studios temporarily moving into the historic industrial monument. Beginning in 2009, the extensive site was developed for modern use with five residential cubes, a geriatric centre, office and commercial space as well as expansive green areas.
With Intensifications Matrix, Friedrich Biedermann has developed an outdoor installation for component/entrance 3 of Heller Park that lends a distinctive identity to the location.
