Quartier 52 Grad Nord
On a former industrial wasteland that was used for the production of pharmaceutical products for 150 years, a sustainable new-build quarter is growing. It is located between Regattastrasse and Dahme-Ufer with views as far as the old town of Köpenick. A total of around 1,000 apartments are being built on the construction sites designed by various architectural firms.

At the center of Quartier 52° Nord is a specially designed water basin that serves to retain rainwater: rainwater from the surrounding roofs is fed into the basin and cleaned naturally by the vegetation along the banks. This allows it to return to the natural water cycle through evaporation and infiltration.

BUWOG has received several awards for the project, which was designed according to the sponge city model. These include the German Sustainability Projects Award and the Brownfield Award in Gold.

An energy center for the generation of local heating and electricity, a specially created eco daycare center, a neighborhood café and adjacent, small commercial units are further sustainable and social qualities that specifically open up the quarter to the surrounding area.
