An area with history. On one part of the site stood the former Neukölln Children's Hospital, which ceased operations in 2005. On another part was a former cemetery. The declining demand for cemetery space since the 1980s led to the decision by the Senate to close it in 2011. The last burial on this part of the property took place in the 1980s. The site has not been in use since it was decommissioned in 2011 and was taken over by BUWOG in 2016. As of 2017, the site was cleared and prepared for construction. Before that, it had been largely overgrown as a kind of wasteland, and in some cases trash had been dumped wildly. The dilapidated remaining hospital buildings were demolished.
The land for BUWOG NEUMARIEN covers approximately 56,000 square meters. Some elements of the park are under monument protection. This will be taken into account accordingly in the redesign. Thus, the historical routing and garden-architectural elements and visual axes are preserved.
