Groundbreaking ceremony in Kaufbeuren on September 15, 2025

Kaufbeuren is growing and in urgent need of new residential space. Thanks to a fast and cost-effective construction method, 60 new apartments are now being built on Marktoberdorfer Straße.

The construction site on Marktoberdorfer Straße has been opened with a symbolic groundbreaking together with Mayor Stefan Bosse. Four apartment buildings with five full storeys will be added to an open space between existing residential buildings – a premium redensification project that will create 60 new rental apartments. Under the management of BUWOG and as a result of an innovative modular construction method using brick developed by the Mindelheim-based company WMM Modulbau GmbH, (only in German) construction times will be significantly reduced: following the official groundbreaking ceremony on 15 September 2025, the apartments are expected to be ready for rental beginning in March 2026, after an estimated construction period of just around six months.

Mayor Stefan Bosse: “Every new apartment helps improve the housing supply in Kaufbeuren. It is especially positive when this needed residential construction, as here on Marktoberdorfer Straße, can be achieved so quickly and by means of quality redensification while also commissioning local specialist companies from the region.”

Udo Sauter, managing director of BUWOG: “We are delighted to be able to create new residential space here using innovative construction methods, implemented with a building form and volume that will blend harmoniously into the existing development.”

Robert Stellmach, Vonovia regional manager: “The new rental apartments will create a marvellous range of housing in Kaufbeuren in a very short time. Also, 60 above-ground parking spaces including preinstallation for e-mobility, 60 bicycle parking spaces and 16 storage boxes in the outdoor area are being created as an alternative to basement compartments. Lifts to every floor and attractive fixtures and fittings with modern tiled bathrooms, parquet flooring in the living areas and premium fitted kitchens with electrical appliances make living here especially attractive.”

Manuela Gebhart, Vonovia regional manager for Bavaria: “These particularly high-quality new buildings are a perfect addition. This is because we only have three- and four-room apartments in our portfolio in the surrounding development area, and the new building will enable us to cater to other interested parties who are looking specifically for compact one- and two-room apartments. All of the apartments are barrier-free and most have balconies or, depending on their location, terraces.”

The tenants of the surrounding buildings have already been informed about the start of civil engineering works.

The new construction project, which meets energy efficiency standards, marks the start of the subsequent development of the “Am Flugfeld” development. The existing development on Marktoberdorfer Straße – between Apfeltranger Straße and the sports pitch – is expected to be upgraded from mid-2026 onwards. To this end, there are plans to comprehensively modernise the existing buildings and, where necessary, convert top-floor areas into additional new apartments.
