Sustainable and environmentally conscious practices are becoming increasingly important in the planning, construction and operation of residential properties. As in 2024, BUWOG Bauträger GmbH has once again been awarded the title of “Excellent Sustainability” by the F.A.Z. Institute in 2025.

When selecting environmentally compatible building materials, with climate-adapted construction and with the creation of green open spaces and retention areas, there is much that can be done correctly when it comes to new construction and neighbourhood development. The latest study by ServiceValue in cooperation with the F.A.Z.-Institute now highlights which players are making a positive impression in the digital space through their credible, forward-looking and consistent commitment. For the “Excellent Sustainability 2025” study, specific mentions of around 17,000 companies were identified and assigned during the study period from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2025. For the second time, BUWOG Bauträger GmbH has been recognised as one of nine real estate companies nationwide. BUWOG significantly improved on last year's score of 84.1 out of 100 points and has now achieved a result of 89.4 points.

Daniel Riedl, member of the management board of Vonovia SE responsible, among other things, for BUWOG development in Germany: “Cost development in planning and construction requires continuous, intelligent optimisation of new construction projects and neighbourhood developments. For BUWOG, there is no question that implementation in the areas of environmental, social and economic sustainability must be effective. From the initial planning stage onwards, we can take sustainable qualities into account and implement them in our development work – adapted to individual needs and in line with the location and type of the respective project. This ranges from the refurbishment of historic buildings and their conversion into new residential space to the realisation of innovative sponge city concepts. In particular, building with timber and implementing serial, modular and systemic construction methods offer considerable opportunities to quickly create affordable and sustainable residential space and to improve the recyclability of raw and building materials.”

For example, BUWOG is currently carrying out Germany’s largest single-source timber construction project in Berlin. In Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Lichtenberg, BUWOG is also implementing two redensification projects in collaboration with GROPYUS, creating new residential space on sites in existing residential developments.

The “Excellent Sustainability 2025” study is available online (in German) on the ServiceValue website at https://servicevalue.de/ranking/exzellente-nachhaltigkeit/. The current study was supported by the renowned IMWF Institute for Management and Economic Research.

BUWOG has pursued a committed sustainability agenda for many years and is also a member of the ODH Open District Hub, a research and practice initiative aimed at implementing the energy transition in developments by linking the electricity, heat and mobility sectors. BUWOG is also active in the COALITION for TIMBER CONSTRUCTION and plans to realise approximately 20 percent of its development pipeline as timber structures.
