Apartment building on Gablenzgasse
In addition to the Graf Radetzky barracks, a large residential building (including a casino) for officers was built on the “Schmelz”. The elongated cube is characterised by a three-storey façade structure as well as striking corner and central risalits and corresponds formally with the barracks itself. The rich façade decor and the interior design are largely original (stucco work, tiles, windows, handrails, door leaves and door handles). The late historicist building is considered a rare example of specifically Austrian military architecture with its strictly elegant appearance.
The façade was refurbished and the rooftop extended in 2004, and the entire building was listed as an historical monument in 2006. The former officers’ mess is currently used as a restaurant.
