Altes Rathaus, Friesach

The striking corner building served as the city hall of Carinthia's oldest town from 1770 to 1867. It was furnished with its late classicist façade featuring colossal Ionic pilasters and triangular gable roofing in 1837 and was then used as a district court. Central façade elements include the clock, an oval stucco relief of Justitia and a round Roman medallion (from a second-century tomb) with a portrait of a woman in local costume.

With the restoration by BUWOG in 1999, the “first house on the square” was converted into a residential building. The vaulted rooms on the ground floor are still used by businesses and the public library; the two upper floors are used as apartments.
