The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is launching the Art in Architecture Competition together with BUWOG. Graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna who completed their studies no more than five years ago have until 3 September 2024 to submit their interventions, installations or artistic works. Three winning projects selected by a jury of experts will be on display at as many as ten BUWOG locations over the next ten years. This will give the graduates a particularly lasting presence in busy locations in Austria and abroad. The competition is also endowed with prize money in the amount of EUR 5,000.

“Art and creativity play an important role in our day-to-day work and in the lives of many of our customers, for we have already created space for artistic interventions in our Customer and Administrative Centre on Rathausstrasse as well as in numerous BUWOG properties,” says Andreas Holler, BUWOG Group GmbH managing director responsible for project development. “With the Art in Architecture Competition, we are specifically targeting aspiring talent because it is very important to us to promote the activities of artists at an early stage and to support them on their path. By realising the winning projects at future BUWOG locations, we simultaneously enable our customers to experience art in a new way. We are therefore extremely delighted to have the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna join us as a partner to pursue this goal.”

“With the well-endowed Art in Architecture Competition, which is organised in cooperation with BUWOG, we as an art university are committed to supporting aspiring graduates and to raising awareness of the cultural significance of art,” says Ingeborg Erhart, vice rector of art and teaching, emphasising the role of promoting young artists at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. “With this important initiative, we are delighted to give artists who have only recently graduated from the academy a platform and the opportunity to interact with the residents of BUWOG’s buildings and public space with their artistic projects and to create spaces for reflection and inspiration. The winners of the award thus make a lasting, valuable contribution to a vibrant urban and cultural landscape.”

The selection of winners is made by a jury of experts comprising artist Alfredo Barsuglia (artist), Ingeborg Erhart (vice rector of art and teaching, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna), Ingrid Fitzek-Unterberger (director of marketing and communication, BUWOG), Alexandra Grausam (curator, BUWOG), Michael Herbek (director of project development, BUWOG), Lisa Ortner-Kreil (curator, Kunstforum Vienna) and Eva Sommeregger (Institute of Architecture, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna).

Submissions are possible through 3 September 2024 via the  submission platform. The winning projects will be selected in fall of 2024.
