Former Oberdöbling district office building

Gatterburggasse was created in 1831 after an imperial and royal garden was divided up. Beginning in 1893, there was an elongated timber-framed building in the centre, which served as an office building until 1991 and also housed the district court until 1991. During the Nazi era, the building served as the “Wehrmacht Remand Prison XIX, Döbling branch” (its use following 1945 is unclear). Its “dark history of use” had long since been dismantled and architecturally invisible, apart from the large green area (former courtyard). In 2020, the site was redeveloped as the exclusive residential building “Inside XIX”. The pre-war building was refurbished based on the original style, and it was expanded to include a large new building (116 apartments including a green courtyard and spacious communal areas). Atelier Heiss Architekten brought Claus Prokop on board for an artistic intervention in the historic foyer, for the balcony and staircase railings and for the design of the window grilles.

The project won the European Property 5-Star Award for “Best Residential Renovation”.
